Not by the Direct Method.
Google correlates for comic book heroes and writers.

So Google correlate. Not exactly well-explained. But once you dope out what it does, you can start data mining. And after I got the predictable searches out of the way (“sex,” “barbecue”) I turned to, what else? Comic book heroes.

  • Superman. Highest correlation is neither Batman nor one of the movies, but the Fantastic Four. (I’m sure DC is thrilled about that). Highest search is in Utah, lowest is in Montana. Highest correlation in Morocco is…wait for it…Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
  • Batman. Highest correlation is “The Dark Knight,” which is appropriate. Highest search is in Utah (?), lowest is in Hawaii (?). Highest correlation in China is 格斗 士 (I assume that’s a good thing). Highest correlation in the U.K. is “Batman villains.” #3 correlation in Egypt is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. (Batman would not approve).
  • Wonder Woman. Oy vey. #1 is “Wonder Woman Movie,” #3 is “5.0.1,” #4 is “Jailbreak ios 5,” #5 is “untethered jailbreak ios 5,” #10 is “delete contacts.” (I’m sure DC is overjoyed with these results). Highest correlation is West Virginia (Mountaineers represent!), lowest is Maine (oh, no!). Highest correlation in Brazil is “Speedstar,” #10 in China is “French kiss” (look at the variations!), #1 in India is “lip.” Get it together, DC, she’s your largest female hero, she deserves better search results than this.
  • Spider-Man. #1 is “Spider-Man 3.” Highest search is in New York (of course—Daily Bugle staffers probably do a lot of Googling of Spidey), lowest is in Montana. #1 in Egypt is “Spider-Man 3” (good SEOing there, Marvel p.r. dept)…and I couldn’t find any bizarre search results in any other countries. It’s all “Spider-Man” and “Spiderman” and “Spider-Man 3.” Marvel SEO 1, DC SEO 0.
  • Avengers. #1 is “The Avengers,” #10 is “Sebastian Shaw.” (…huh?) Highest correlation is West Virginia (wooo!), lowest is Virginia (heathens!). I didn’t find any good international results.

And because I just had to do it:

  • No results for Brian Bendis.
  • No results for Kurt Busiek.
  • John Byrne (his list is priceless: #1 is “Chim Chim,” #2 is “Mens fur,” #3 is “Dr. Bernard,” #4 is “Scrabble generator,” #5 is “Student Leaders,” and so on—way to create a legacy for yourself, Mr. Byrne). Most popular in Delaware, least popular in Montana. (So basically he’ll be forgotten about fifteen minutes after he dies).
  • Warren Ellis is most popular in Oregon, least in Utah.
  • Garth Ennis (#1 is “Ray Wise,” #3 is “Chin Fat,” #5 is “Clearblue easy fertility monitor”) is most popular in New Jersey (ahahaha), least in Vermont.
  • Matt Fraction (#1 is “Sport of Kings,” which is what they call making love to him, or so I’ve heard). Most popular in Kansas, least in New Mexico.
  • Mark Millar (#1 is “track ip address,” #2 is “princess peach costume,” #6 is “victoria secret offer code,” all of which seem appropriate) is most popular in Alaska, least in Wyoming.
  • Alan Moore (#1 is Shelley Duval, #2 is Courtney Love, #3 is Fire Walk With Me, and the list just gets better after that), is most popular in Oregon, least in Hawaii.
  • Jeff Parker (#1 is Alan Bates, #2 is ”Flying Cat,” and so on) is most popular in Oregon, least in Alaska.

Good clean fun, eh?
